The Kinks and Kurls Expo, organized by The Kurl Friends, is an annual celebration of all things natural hair – call it the naturalista party of the year. The main objective is to celebrate natural hair in its various forms and personalities, while debunking the myths surrounding having natural hair.
It was launched in 2015 as a natural hair meet-up with about 30 people in attendance. It’s grown over the years, and 2018 promises to be even bigger, a testament to how natural hair is now viewed in Uganda. True to form, it has since grown to cater to not just women alone, but also men looking to improve their grooming options, and other attendees seeking advice on how to embark on healthier lifestyles.
The Expo showcases growing sets of Ugandan entrepreneurs that have carved out their niche by catering to the need for home-grown products. This is of particular interest to anyone passionate about the Buy Ugandan, Build Uganda Initiative. Our country is blessed with an abundance of rich natural resources, and the fact that these entrepreneurs are tapping into that potential, giving back to the community and employing people along their journeys truly deserves three hefty cheers!
Also, the Kinks and Kurls Expo team supports a charity every year because they feel strongly about giving back, and supporting educational/literary efforts, youth empowerment and health causes. (If you were wondering why there’s an entrance fee, there’s your reason)

What to expect at the Kinks and Kurls Expo 2018
The event will feature natural hair, body and skin products made in Uganda by Ugandans, health and wellness enthusiasts, lifestyle blogger personalities, unique fashion houses, inspiring artists, beauty gurus, a kiddie’s section and grooming establishments that cater to natural hair.
Topics to be discussed include natural hair care (getting acquainted with the basics), style inspirations, and practical regimens, nutrition and wellness, and fashion and beauty tips.
As usual, the Kurl Friends and their team of trustees will be on the lookout for cool haircuts, afros, headwraps, updos and twistouts to award. We don’t have to tell you to come dressed like you mean it – the dress code is EXTRA. MAGIC. FLY. It’s subject to varied interpretations but one thing’s for sure – we’ll be showing up, and showing out.
This year, the Expo has switched things up a bit by adding some activity stations aka “Bars” where you can engage in demos, talks, games, and win some fun prizes. I’d spill the beans on that but keep your eyes peeled for the announcements on the Expo social channels.
